Mechanical Pencil Lead Diameters: A Complete Guide
Reach for a mechanical pencil and the first choice you make — often without realizing it — is lead diameter. That single number, printed on the barrel in millimeters, sets how fine your lines are, how easily the lead snaps, and what kind of work the pencil is suited to. Understanding the standard sizes makes it easy to pick the right pencil and, just as importantly, to buy leads that actually fit it.
The common diameters
Mechanical pencil leads come in a small set of standardized diameters. From finest to broadest, the ones you will actually encounter are:
- 0.3 mm: very fine, for detailed technical drawing, drafting, and small handwriting. The thin lead is precise but the most fragile — it snaps if you bear down.
- 0.5 mm: the everyday default. It balances a fine line against reasonable strength and is the most common size for writing and general use.
- 0.7 mm: a touch thicker and noticeably more break-resistant, favored by anyone with a heavier hand or who writes quickly.
- 0.9 mm: broader and sturdier still, good for bold writing and rougher note-taking.
Above these sit the leadholder sizes — 1.3 mm, and the clutch-pencil 2.0 mm — thick leads meant for sketching, shading, and expressive drawing rather than fine detail. Choosing a diameter
Match the size to what you do most:

- General writing and note-taking: 0.5 mm if you like a crisp line, 0.7 mm if you press hard or hate snapping leads.
- Sketching and shading: 0.9 mm, 1.3 mm, or a 2.0 mm leadholder, where a broad, soft line matters more than precision.

Why thinner lead breaks more easily
The relationship is simple physics: a thinner rod of graphite has less material to resist the sideways force of your hand, so it snaps more readily. A 0.3 mm lead demands a light, controlled touch, while a 0.7 mm lead shrugs off pressure that would shatter it. If you find yourself constantly breaking leads, the fix is often not a different brand but a larger diameter or a lighter hand.
Diameter and grade are two separate choices
It is worth separating two things that beginners often blur together. Diameter is the physical thickness of the lead; grade — HB, 2B, H, and so on — is its hardness and darkness, on exactly the same scale used for wooden pencils. The two are independent: you can buy 0.5 mm lead in HB, in 2B, or in H, and pick the diameter and the grade separately to suit your work. A 0.5 mm 2B gives you a fine but dark and soft line; a 0.7 mm H gives you a thicker but light and hard one.

A 0.5 mm lead from one manufacturer fits any 0.5 mm mechanical pencil from any other, and the same holds for every common size.
