Which Pencil Lead Grade Actually Fits What You're Drawing (and Why Softer Leads Snap More)
“Just use an HB” is fine advice for someone who only ever writes shopping lists, and bad advice for almost everyone else. The right pencil grade depends entirely on what the mark on the page needs to do — hold a crisp technical line for an hour, build dark tone quickly, or survive a standardized test scanner — and the HB scale exists specifically to let you dial that in rather than default to the middle every time. This is a task-by-task walk through picking a grade on purpose, plus the underlying mechanical reason softer leads are the ones that keep snapping on you again and again, whether that lead lives in a wooden pencil, a leadholder, or a mechanical pencil.
Two axes, not one line
It helps to stop thinking of the scale as a single line from “bad” to “good” and start thinking of it as two properties moving in opposite directions: darkness and point retention. Score every common grade from 9H to 9B on a 1–10 scale for each, and a hard 4H comes out with a darkness of about 3 and a point retention of about 8 — faint but durable. A soft 6B flips that almost exactly: a darkness around 9 and a point retention around 2 — bold but short-lived between sharpenings. The everyday HB sits closer to the middle than either extreme, at a darkness of about 6 and a point retention of about 5, which is exactly why it works passably for almost anything without being the best choice for much of anything in particular.
One more wrinkle: the tool's own hardness bucket
It's worth knowing that "soft" doesn't start where you might expect. Grouped into hard, medium, and soft bands by rank, H, F, HB, and B all land in the medium band — the soft band doesn't begin until 2B. That surprises people who assume HB is basically hard and B is basically soft; on the full 9H–9B scale, both sit closer to the hard end than the soft one. If you've been avoiding B because it sounded too soft for note-taking, it's worth trying — it's only one step darker than HB, not a leap into sketching territory.
Eight tasks, eight grades
Rather than working out where a task falls on the scale from scratch, here's where eight common ones land, with the reasoning behind each:
- Fine technical drafting and construction lines: 3H — a hard grade for crisp, light lines that won't smudge under a straightedge or show through a final inked drawing.
- General technical drawing: 2H (US #4) — hard enough for clean lines that still read clearly without a magnifier.
- Everyday general writing: HB (US #2) — the all-round default, a legible line with a reasonable point life between sharpenings.
- Note-taking: HB (US #2) — the same balance of darkness and durability, chosen for a full page of continuous writing rather than short bursts.
- Standardized test forms: HB (US #2) — specifically because it's the classic #2 pencil scanners are calibrated to read.
- Loose sketching and outlines: 2B — soft enough for expressive, confident lines that erase cleanly without gouging the page.
- Shading: 4B — a soft, dark grade that lays down even tone quickly across a larger area.
- Deep shadows and the darkest values: 6B — very soft and very black, reserved for the areas of a drawing that need to read as genuinely dark.

Why softer grades break more easily
The relationship between grade and breakage comes straight from what the core is made of. A pencil's graphite core is a fired mixture of graphite and clay, and softer, darker grades use more graphite relative to clay — the same shift that makes the line darker also makes the core physically weaker, because graphite itself is a soft, flaky mineral that shears easily under sideways force, while the clay binder is what gives the core its structural stiffness. Less clay means less stiffness. A worked comparison: the same pressure, two grades
Picture the same 0.5 mm mechanical pencil loaded first with a hard 2H, then with a soft 4B, both pushed with the same firm sketching pressure. The 2H, with a point-retention score around 7 on the tool's scale, holds its shape and keeps writing at roughly the same width for a long stretch, resisting the pressure because its higher clay content stiffens the core. The 4B, at a point-retention score around 3, dulls almost immediately under that same pressure and is measurably more likely to snap outright rather than just wear down, because there's simply less clay holding the core together against a sideways load. Neither grade is wrong for a sketching task — but a heavy-handed sketcher reaching for 4B will snap leads far more often than the same hand would with a firmer 2B or HB, and the fix is usually a lighter touch or a larger lead diameter, not a different brand.
The grade most people skip entirely
F rarely gets mentioned outside professional and technical contexts, and it's worth a second look. Sitting one step harder than HB with a similar darkness and point retention — both land in the same medium band on the tool's scale, at a darkness of about 5 versus HB's 6 — F is a genuinely useful everyday grade for anyone who writes a lot and wants a slightly crisper, more durable point than HB without dropping all the way to H's noticeably lighter line. It's the same grade as the US #2½, a number most people have never seen on a pencil despite having heard of #2 and #3 their whole lives.
Trading a little of the “right” grade for less sharpening
The task-based recommendations above assume you want the ideal balance of darkness and durability for that specific task, but plenty of people reasonably weigh a third factor: how often they're willing to stop and sharpen. If a recommended grade sits right on the edge between two point-retention bands, it's entirely reasonable to nudge one step harder than the “ideal” pick purely to stretch the time between sharpenings, accepting a slightly lighter line in exchange. This trade only makes sense within a step or two — someone reaching for a 6H because sharpening an HB feels tedious will end up with a line so faint it undermines the point of writing by hand at all. Nudge, don't overcorrect.
Building a small kit instead of committing to one grade
Because grade and diameter are bought separately, and any lead of the right diameter fits any pencil of that diameter, there's little reason to standardize on a single grade across every pencil you own. A practical, inexpensive setup keeps one barrel loaded with an HB or F for everyday writing and note-taking, and a second barrel — same diameter, different lead — loaded with a 2B or 4B for sketching and shading. Refilling either one costs the same regardless of grade, so the only real cost of keeping both on hand is a second pencil body, not a second commitment.
Matching grade to your own hand, not just the task
Task is the first filter, but how hard you naturally press is the second one, and it can override the "correct" answer for a task. Someone with a heavy hand who loves the look of 6B shading will snap far more leads at 0.3 mm or 0.5 mm than someone with a light touch using the identical grade, simply because more force reaches the same fragile core. If you keep reaching for soft, dark grades and keep breaking leads, there are really only two honest fixes: lighten your hand, or move up a diameter so there's more material to resist the same pressure — reaching for a harder grade you don't actually want the look of is a worse trade than either.
If you're left-handed
Hand dominance is worth folding into the grade decision the same way it's worth folding into pen choice. A left-handed writer's hand travels across freshly-written graphite the same way it travels across freshly-written ink, and a soft, heavily-deposited grade like 2B or 4B smudges more readily under that drag than a firmer HB or F does. This doesn't mean avoiding soft grades entirely for sketching or shading, but for everyday left-handed writing specifically, leaning one step firmer than the general recommendation — an F instead of an HB, for instance — trades a slightly lighter line for meaningfully less smudging across a page.
Grade is a choice you can make per pencil, not per drawing
Because grade and diameter are independent and swapping lead in a mechanical pencil takes seconds, there's rarely a reason to compromise on one grade for an entire project. A technical sketch that needs light construction lines and later needs dark, confident final linework is a perfectly normal reason to keep two pencils loaded — a 2H for the underdrawing, a 2B or 4B for the finished lines — rather than trying to make one grade do both jobs by pressing harder or softer than the lead wants to go.
