How much nib width alone changes things
Holding paper and humidity constant at standard/50%, nib width alone spans a wide range. An Extra Fine nib on absorbent paper at low humidity dries in as little as about 1.4 seconds — almost instant. The same absorbent paper with a Medium nib instead comes out to about 4 seconds. Move up to a Broad nib on the slowest-drying premium coated paper at high humidity, and the estimate climbs to around 37 seconds — more than 25 times longer than the fastest combination, using nothing but different nib widths and paper types. Stub and italic nibs deserve a specific mention: because they lay down more ink than their nominal width suggests, a stub behaves closer to a Broad than to whatever letter size is printed on it — on coated paper at 50% humidity, a stub estimates at around 23 seconds, squarely in the “slow” band alongside much wider round nibs.
How much paper alone changes things

How much humidity alone changes things

Left-handed writing and smearing
