These bands aren't arbitrary round numbers — they roughly track where a typical trouser pocket starts to sag or swing noticeably against your leg while walking, based on how EDC-focused carriers generally describe the transition points.
A light everyday kit, worked out
Take a simple, minimal loadout: a 22 g aluminum EDC pen, a 12 g 0.5 mm mechanical pencil, a pair of 2 g spare lead tubes, and a 35 g pocket notebook. Run that through the calculator and it totals 73 g, or about 2.6 oz — comfortably inside the “pocket-friendly” band. Broken down by share of the total, the notebook alone accounts for nearly 48% of the kit's weight, the pen about 30%, the pencil about 16%, and the two lead tubes together about 5%. Where the extra 128 grams actually went

The calculator reports both units because pen and stationery specs are inconsistently listed in either one depending on the maker and region — a European pen brand is more likely to state weight in grams, while a US-made pocket tool often lists ounces. Converting once at the total level, rather than trying to convert every individual spec before adding it up, avoids compounding small rounding errors across a whole kit. Quantity adds up faster than people expect
